Frifot (Sweden)

Calling a Swedish folk music trio international stars might be considered an overstatement. But for Frifot: Lena Willemark, Ale Möller, and Per Gudmundson; this may well be true. They have advanced the standing of Swedish folk music expression internationally and at home. The musicians in Frifot have been involved in albums which have sold hundreds of thousands of copies in Europe, USA, Asia and Latin America.

Frifot holds a unique position among the greats of Swedish folk music. Since its birth in 1987, the trio has been the fort runner on an active traditional folk music scene. This is not surprising since Frifot consists of three of the most colourful individuals in Swedish folk music. All three are deeply rooted in the tradition and passionately focused on transforming and using this knowledge to bring the genre into the present and move it forward.

Part of their renown comes from the group's extensive touring. Apart from Scandinavia they have toured Slovakia, Poland, England, Germany, Belgium, Holland, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Austria, USA and India. The USA in particular has shown great interest as a result of the group's extensive touring there in the past few years. The downside to the widespread international touring is that their live appearances on domestic turf have become all too scarce. In January, during the group's first Swedish tour in years, many people were unable to hear them because the shows sold out.

The new album "Sluring" is the group's fifth full length CD and won both a Swedish Grammy award and the alternative Manifest award in 2004.
