The Cullivoe Fiddlers (Shetland)

The Cullivoe Fiddlers from Shetland (‘Cullivoe’ derives from Old Norse ‘Kollavagr’) were formed in and around 1970.They are not frequent visitors to the recording studio, nor do they tour much beyond an occasional concert on the Scottish mainland. But Aly Bain has persuaded them that likeminded fiddlers meet at the festival in Falun and thus we are extremely proud to offer a musical experience that is a rare opportunity indeed.

The Cullivoe style of fiddling is a unique local style within Shetland.  It can be traced all the way back to the 19th century and the playing of Brucie Danielson.  Before he died in the 1930s he had passed on his knowledge to Willie Barclay Henderson (1900-77) and Bobby Jamieson (1892-1977).  Bobby and Willie continued to play into old age and it was their playing which was the inspiration behind the formation of the Cullivoe Fiddlers.  Current members Angus Henry and John Henderson were founder members of the group.
