SVÄRDSJÖ SPELMANSLAG (Sweden)

It is not a common sight to see a traditional spelmanslag (group of fiddlers) on the stage in a nightclub. This is not true if you ask the spelmanslag from Svärdsjö. They are comfortable with their music – tunes from Svärdsjö and Enviken – and they know how to take on an audience. It is really obvious that they really enjoy playing dance music. They have the force and the energy that not many have. It is entertaining just to watch!

Svärdsjö spelmanslag have been called the most extrovert Swedish spelmanslag by folk and world music magazine Lira and they have done shows in the US, France, Hungary, Finland and on Crete. They have been on tour in Laos in collaboration a cultural aid project.

What do they sound like? Someone described them in 1929: "The old tunes from Svärdsjö are mainly in the major key, they are brisk and merry with sweeping melodies. They are a mirror of the smiling landscape that they come from and also of the minds of the local population – easy and accessible.
