BOLLNÄSBYGDENS SPELMANSLAG (Sweden)

Bollnäsbygdens Spelmanslag was formed in 1949 and has developed into something of a melting pot for music from the region of Hälsingland

On the cover of their latest CD they proclaim: From time immemorial, folk musicians have made music on whatever has been available. Ritual drums, Hammond organs, pipes, hurdy-gurdys and saxophones. One has also, of course, made use of the fiddle. Music is here and now, perhaps tomorrow, but never yesterday. Tradition - by all means - though not preservation for its own sake, but rather as food for renewal. Tradition implies change. Bollnäsbygdens Spelmanslag (The Bollnäs County Fiddlers), the oldest and largest group of its kind in all of Hälsingland, exists here and now. The magic of music is always experienced in the present. Never in dusty archives or in wild dreams of things yet to come.
