West African Dance

Adjei Apenteng was born and raised in Teshie, just outside Accra i Ghana. His professional dance career began in 1988 when he met Emmanuel Gomado, a founder leader of the "Odehe Dance Company" (ODC). Adjei became the principal dancer of ODC in 1991. With more than 12 years experience as a dance teacher, Adjei has instructed and performed in both Ghana and Europe.

Adjei now lives and works in Oslo and is regularly invited by schools and universities to lead dance and drum classes with strong emphasis on West African traditions. He also arranges his own workshops and is in high demand as an instructor.
Adjei teaches with enthusiasm, passion and patience. Through his love of dance and music and his respect and knowledge of his cultural traditions, he can reveal the wealth of West African culture. The dialog between dance and drums is central to the arrangement and art of storytelling about everyday life - love, sadness, war, peace, and community.

Joining the class are Cecilia Palm and friends. Cecilia is a percussionist, dancer and singer in the group Ohemaa that performs traditional music from Ghana. She has more than ten years experience as a performer and percussionist.

Ghanaian dancing is everything from subtle to explosive so bring clothes that you can move freely in. No special shoes are needed because you'll be dancing barefoot!
