Fiddling
Playing - A Childs play
Fiddles can be played in various traditional styles.
Coming to the Falun Folkmusik Festival for the first time is ChildsPlay,
a collection of fiddlers who represent a number of various fiddle
traditions including Cape Breton fiddling, Southern Appalachian Old Time
fiddling, Irish, Bluegrass and Swing and French-Canadian Music.
This course will be for people who have some experience
playing the fiddle, but no one will be turned away. We will break into
small groups that will allow you to focus on one tradition for the three
days. Each workshop will focus on the various bowing styles of the tradition,
repertoire of each style and will feature distinctions between the different
playing styles within each tradition.
Representing Cape Breton fiddling will be Roger Treat
and Hanneke Cassel. Roger Treat has been regularly featured at Cape
Breton's Glendale, Rollo Bay and St. Anne's festivals. Hanneke Cassel,
a frequent visitor to Cape Breton, has studied with Buddy MacMaster
and Natalie MacMaster among others.
Representing Southern Appalachian Old Time Music will
be Steve Hickman, Dave Langford, Mark Simos and Rushad Eggleston. Steve
Hickman, one the truly great performers of old time music, has been
electrifying audiences for over thirty years. Dave Langford is extremely
well versed in the various fiddling styles within old time music and
Mark Simos, will feature some of the repertoire and bowings of a few
renowned Appalachian fiddling masters. Rushad Eggleston will blow you
away with his virtuosity on Appalachian cello! They will be accompanied
by Peter Barnes on guitar.
Representing Irish Music will be Laurel Martin, Kerry
Elkin, and Ellen Gawler. Laurel Martin has studied extensively with
the great Seamus Connolly of County Clare, Ireland. Kerry Elkin and
Ellen Gawler have been playing traditional Irish fiddle tunes for many
years at dances all over the United States.
Representing Bluegrass and Swing fiddle will be Joyce
Andersen and Laura Light. Joyce Andersen is equally at home playing
bluegrass or swing fiddle, while Laura Light is a wonderfully accomplished
swing fiddler and singer. They will be accompanied by Ralph Gordon on
bass.
Representing French-Canadian Music will be Joe Dezarn,
Debby Knight and Mary Lea. All three have studied the various fiddling
styles of Quebec and have performed at dances throughout North America
for over twenty years.
