Oriental Dancing

Encouraging rhythms, see-through veils, hips swaying with the music, the beauty and the sensuality.

The Arabian Nights…The Oriental dance has its special place at the festival, and we are delighted to see that it continues to draw course participants. This year the Oriental dance course is intended mainly for you who has several terms of previous training and who wants to deepen their knowledge in the Oriental dance. During the week we practice Egypt-dance and rhythms.

Instructors are Suzanne Petrén Abou Shebika and Mohamed Abou Shebika. Suzanne has been dancing in the Oriental way for 20 years. She teaches the classical oriental style. This year the course begins with technique training and a theoretical survey of the two Egyptian styles that will be in focus of the course. The first one is El Haggala, Egyptian Bedouin dance, a down-to-earth dance with large tough moves based on hiptechnique to exciting drum rhythms. Very shimmy!

The second style is Oriental, Arabian elassic dance. Here we practice Oriental-technique with the Wahda kebria and Maksoum rhythms. We dance to a choreography that fits famous songs by the legendary singer Oum Khaltoum. Mohammed Abou Sheika is a choreographer, a dancer and also a very established tabla player.

Egyptian Folk dances, costumes and rhythms along the Nile are other samples that you will get an insight into during this week with Mohammed & Suzanne!
