Tarras - England

Tarras is a young band that has been fed the Celtic and the English folk music since they were born, but they have been raised on pop, reggae, African rhythms, blues, jazz and everything in between – and, not to forget, they lovingly carry the legacy of the 70s’ folk root revivalists. They go to the same school as Fairport Convention and Steeleye Span, only twenty years later.

When they let an African rhythm section take over in the middle of a fast jig, they make it sound as if it really belonged there. Their songs mainly consist of long suites encompassing everything from caressing ballads, through mighty vocal passages to rhythmical excursions on a fiddle or congas or djembe. And sometimes it’s just plain blues.

This may (and rightfully so!) sound like a wet dream for the heads of the record labels. This is feel-good music at its best! These musicians are absolute masters and they have a highly developed sense for all the different musical emotions.

The group’s core members come from Northumberland in the north of England, bordering on Scotland, and they are: Joss Clap, bass, is a great interpreter of traditional English music but also a passionate blues player, Rob Armstrong, a master of the Cittern – an instrument long associated with an all but lost era of North Eastern folk music, Ben Murray, a piano player that is seldom seen without his accordion and Jon Redfern, who mainly plays the Djembe and congas but also the guitar and flute. The other members are Louise Peacock, fiddle and Sam Murray, soprano saxophone.
