Oskorri - Basque

Oskorri is a group of seven talented multi-instrumentalists that, more than any others, have put the Basque music on the map.

The group was formed during the years of Franco’s dictatorship when music was a political weapon. But Oskorri has shown again and again that it is bigger than that.

Oskorri have found ancient but fresh springs of inspiration, where every drop of water is fresh and new. They have found breezy ballads, lively dances, and wonderful songs that sound medieval to our ears. They play flutes, bagpipes and xylophone, but also modern instruments – it can be difficult to tell which is ancient and which is modern. Gitarra Elektrikoa is Basque for electric guitar and the name sounds almost as ancient as txalaparta, txintxarriak, caxixis or some of the other traditional instruments that they play.

Still, they refuse to be connected with traditionalism and regionalism. They celebrated their 25th anniversary by having large numbers of artists from about ten different countries sing Oskorri’s songs in their own language. On their latest album "Ura" (which means water in Basque), many guests from different countries made contributions. Among the guests was Michael Bordeleau, who plays with La Bottine Souriante at the Falun Folkmusik Festival.

Oskorri consists of Natxo de Felipe, percussion, guitar and vocals; Anton Latxa, guitar and vocals; Bixente Martinez, electric guitar and mandolin; Xabier Zeberio, fiddle and vocals; Txarli de Pablo, bass; Jose Urrejola, saxophone and flutes and Jose Salbide, alboka, txirula and bagpipes.
