Music from Småland

Småland holds many different styles of music and they have raised many famous fiddlers, such as the notorious shoemaker August Strömberg (1860-1947) from Jät and the wandering hobo Ristman (1786-1832). Ristman had had his face eaten by cancer and therefore always wore a mask made of birch bark.

The first real records of folk music in Sweden were written down in Småland. Farmer Petter Rudebeck was one of the first to put traditional ballads and ancient games on paper. Many helped with the chronicles during the 19th century and in turn helped make Småland famous for its music.

Since then the focus has shifted a bit and turned its eyes on other parts of Sweden, but that doesn’t change the fact that there is a lot of interesting music to be found in Småland such as harpor, humlar, skalmejor, modal slängpolskor ...

Småland is the official guest region at this years festival edition. Wednesday evening at Dalecarlia Museum will therefore to a large extent focus on music from Småland. The closing performance this evening eill be Småland All Stars – fiddlers and spelmanslag selected by Smålands spelmansförbund.
