Haig Yazdjian - Greece

Syrian born of Armenian parents, Haig has been living and playing in Greece for the last twenty years. Origin, upbringing, domicile and livelihood in the cultural influx of Eastern Mediterranean has allowed Haig to weave together the intricate centuries old music tradition of Armenia and the Middle East with the music idioms of the West wandering in domains of music creativity that bear the strongest creative forces of both worlds.

In those domains, Haig is in search of a music expression wishing to transcend time and geographical barriers. Heavily relying on tradition, which allows him to echo the originality, boldness and childlike naivete that come along. Exploring the domains of improvisation and experimentation with the oud and the vocal idioms of his descent, opening new venues for a music that is as confined to geography in as much as universal.

All such elements are vivid in his live performances. In his concerts, Haig plays (and sings) traditional Armenian songs, next to his own compositions from his three albums (Talar, Garin and The Beast on the Moon) notwithstanding impromptu compositions that are born on the very moment of improvisation.

Haig, who plays oud and saz, is accompanied by some of the finest musicians of the emerging world and improvisational Greek music scene, many of which originate from a number of countries of Eastern Mediterranean: Nikos Sidirokastritis, drums; Fotis Mylonas, keyboards; Tzeki Soulkouki, violin; Vagelis Karipis, percussion, and Haris Lambrakis, ney and whistles.
