Garmarna Sweden

Garmarna have taken their name after the wolf that according to the Nordic mythology lives underground. Garmarna mix traditional folk music instruments with samples and they produce an unconventional and innovative music. It’s raw, heavy and sweaty – with all the force that lives in the sounds and rhythms of folk music.

They made it on an international level in ’95 with the critically acclaimed album "Guds Spelmän" (Gods Fiddlers). Garmarna have since then regularly been touring Europe and the US. They have been especially successful in the US where they have been on the cover of Billboard Magazine twice.

This spring, Garmarna released a much-acclaimed album with interpretations of the texts and music of Hildegard von Bingen. The album is the result of five years work where the group has been touched emotionally by this visionary, mystical and extraordinary woman who lived in the Rhine area in the 12th century. She was a mother superior, preacher, doctor, scientist and artist who wrote books on theology, medicine and physiology. She was also a poet and a composer.

Garmarna are Stefan Brisland-Ferner, fiddle, viola, hurdy-gurdy, harp zither, Jew’s harp, backing vocals and rhythms; Emma Härdelin, vocals, fiddle and percussion; Gotte Ringqvist, lute and fiddle; Rickard Westman, guitars, and Jens Höglin, drums, percussion and Jew’s harps.
