Faiz Ali Faiz - Pakistan

Faiz Ali Faiz is a young master of chant in the Pakistan Qawwali music tradition, which is also a part of Sufism. Qawwali are hymns based on the message of love. The music is often very fast and rhythmical, with hand claps and tablas keeping the beat. The singers sing repetitive poetic texts based on passages in the Koran. In the background you can hear a harmonium whose soft tone sometimes merges with the singers voices in a most magnificent way.

Faiz Ali Faiz comes from a family of Qawwali from seven generations. His voice is characterised by its large range and rare energy and intensity. With him in Falun is his uncle, Rehmat Ali Khan, and together they carry the legacy of the great bearer of traditions, Nusrat Fati Ali Khan. They also carry the remnants of a Sufi music culture that was once banished to the lands close to the Punjab province when Djingis Khan was wreaking havoc. Seven centuries later the music is characterised by a spirit of revival, making it accessible even for us with our western ears. The texts are in Urdu – but even if you don’t recognise a single word you will be able to understand.
