A Tribute to a Classical Collection of Swedish Folk music Recordings

The intensity, the power and the spark – it was all there, the first time that Pers Hans and Björn Ståbi played together. They named the duo Bockfot (Goat’s Foot) and released their self-titled album in 1970. The album became a landmark in Swedish folk music, rising high above the Swedish forests.

Bockfot made Swedish folk music interesting for a lot of people. They showed the way for a new generation of fiddlers. It also brought fiddle music to many different places – parks, schools’ assembly halls and clubs in Stockholm. They worked with Swedish ballad singers and troubadours like Jeja Sundström, Stefan Demert, Sid Jansson and many others in a project called Visor & Bockfot (Ballads & Goat’s Foot).

Pers Hans Olsson from Östbjörka and Björn Ståbi from Orsa have shown time and again that Swedish folk music is not stagnant. They are still exploring new routes.

This goes for Kalle Almlöf from Malung, too. He started the group Tre Spelmän (Three Fiddler´s), with Hans and Björn in the 70s. Three very different playing styles merged into something completely new and exciting even though they played traditional tunes.

The two albums, "Bockfot" and "Tre Spelmän", have been played a lot in Swedish homes during the past three decades. The albums were released by the record company Sonet who began releasing folk music in the middle of the 60s and the result was 25 LPs, among the albums was a series of collections of regional music. This year Universal will re-release all the classical recordings on CD, including previously unreleased material.

Sonet All Timers consists of fiddlers playing together for one night only at the festival to celebrate the release of the CDs.

Thore Härdin was part of cult band Skäggmanslaget. He also played with his father on the Hälsingland regional album. Börtas Hans from Västbjörka in Rättvik is not only a great fiddler but also a living dictionary on Swedish folk music. Leif Göras from Östbjörka played with his father Göras Anders on one of the early Sonet albums. Now he plays mostly with Orsa Spelmän. Assar Bengtsson is the prominent fiddler in Skåne. He is a fast player, more than 90 years old and a great storyteller. Kalle Almlöf, Björn Ståbi, Pers Hans and Rättvik fiddler Anders Bjernulf are also part of the Sonet All Timers.

Younger Sonet All Timers are Anders Bjernulf, Lisa Rydberg, Anders Nygårds and organist Gunnar Idenstam.
