Ellika Frisell & Solo Cissokho - Sweden/Senegal

Ellika Frisell, fiddle and viola, was born in Stockholm and plays Swedish folk music in the Bingsjö and Orsa traditions. Ellika is a fiddler and plays songs by masters like Nils Agenmark and Gustaf Päkkos. She has played with many folk music groups such as Filarfolket, Den Fule and Rosenbergs Sjua. She is now active in several solo and duet projects. She recently released a solo album called Tokpolska.

Solo Cissokho, vocals and kora, is a griot, which means storyteller and musician. He was born in Senegal and learned to play the kora, the West African harp, at the age of seven. Solo Cissokho now lives in Norway where he tours with Rikskonserter with folk musicians from all over the world. Apart from the touring, Solo is working on opening a music school in Senegal so that he can pass on his knowledge and the traditions. He plays on the CD "Från Senegal till Setesdal" (From Senegal to Setesdal) with Kirsten Bråten Berg among others.

This summer, and Ellika and Solo will record an album on MNW-Xource. The two met on a stage in a club in Stockholm. The swinging griot met the polska.

Solo is a bearer of his people’s history in a very long tradition of storytelling. Ellika’s music is deeply rooted in the Bingsjö tradition with its vibrant joy of telling stories. Together, they make music where the singing and the rhythmical flow of the kora make a colorful background for the polska.
