Blazin’ Fiddles - Scotland

Blazin’ Fiddles was founded three years ago by some of the most eminent young fiddlers in Scotland and Shetland. They wanted to bring out the special styles within Scottish folk music and show the world that Scottish music is alive and kicking.

Their playing is stripped and simplified, soft yet powerful. No frills, just trusty tweed. The melodies are like little gusts of wind playing in the naked hills in the Highlands, going this way and that, always supported by the strong warm winds provided by the harmonies. Five musical individualists who jointly fan the musical flame and the distinct chords from the guitar and the simple yet heavy piano fuel that same fire.

Bruce MacGregor from Inverness carries the legacy from the master, Donald Ridell. He has created his very own sound that combines both the east and the west in the Scottish Highland tradition. Catriona MacDonald is considered to be one of the most prominent fiddlers in her generation and she proudly bears the Shetland fiddle tradition – and she is also a colorful and progressive performer. Aidan O’Rourke also plays with Tabache from Scotland. Allan Henderson played first violin in Phil Cunningham’s "Highlands and Islands Suite". "Magical" is what one reviewer thought of the performance. Iain MacFarlane every now and then joins the Boys of the Lough, in Aly Bain’s stead – there is no position more demanding in this business!

The fiddles are on fire! Marc Clement’s distinct and intensive guitar playing supports them. Andy Thornburn can play virtually anything on his piano, everything from polska to boogie-woogie. Everyone in Scottish folk music wants to play with him, probably because he has the wisdom and the experience to know exactly when his chords are needed the most. And he plays them only then.
