Black Umfolosi - Zimbabwe

Black Umfolosi from southern Zimbabwe is not only a fantastic choir but also a great dance and theatre ensemble. Despite being relatively young, this eleven-piece-group has already done several praised shows on all continents. With their intensity and enormous joy of life they have become Zimbabwe’s main cultural ambassadors.

They give you thick, rich harmonies and acrobatics, both in the traditional Zulu dance - and in the singing. The group actually represents a culture of dancing and singing which encompasses all of southern Africa - but most of all, they are - themselves.

Black Umfolosi have created dances and songs about things in everyday life - Apartheid, AIDS and the constant conflicts - but also about the eternal things in life - love, family and the great joy of being.

Everything started as a school project in the beginning of the 80s in Bulawayo in Matabeleland on the Zimbabwe border to South Africa. Today, Black Umfolosi is a school of culture in itself. They arrange workshops for the young people of Zimbabwe, where they teach them about dancing and singing, acting, poetry and the traditional costumes. They have come to the Falun Folk music Festival to teach us, too! Black Umfolosi will do a special children’s show before they really let go later on in the evening on the Dance Stage.
